Quick answer
UAE electronic tax invoices have 51 mandatory fields and commercial e-invoices have 49, according to the data dictionary and the FTA technical guidance issued in February 2026. The fields cover invoice details, seller and buyer identifiers (including the 10-digit TIN and Peppol electronic address), tax breakdowns, line items and technical Peppol fields, plus mandatory flags for scenarios such as free zone, deemed supply and margin scheme. All of it is exchanged in the PINT AE format.
Key takeaways
- Tax invoices: 51 mandatory fields; commercial (non-tax) e-invoices: 49.
- The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the first 10 digits of the TRN and is used as the Peppol participant identifier, with scheme 0235 for UAE businesses.
- Transaction-type flags such as free zone, deemed supply and margin scheme are mandatory, using an eight-flag code.
- Much of the data comes from master data, so cleaning customer TRNs and addresses is the first job.
- Use the official FTA and MoF documents for exact element names; vendor summaries simplify them.
The UAE e-invoicing mandate is, in practice, a data mandate. Your invoice layout no longer matters to the system; what matters is whether each required data element is present, correct and in the right format. That is why finance teams keep asking for "the list of mandatory fields". This guide explains what is in it and how to prepare.
How Many Mandatory Fields Are There?
The Ministry of Finance published a data dictionary for consultation in February 2025, and the FTA issued a technical document on 23 February 2026 setting out the full semantic model, code lists and XML structure. According to summaries of that guidance, electronic tax invoices have 51 mandatory fields and commercial electronic invoices (used where a tax invoice is not required) have 49.
What Are the Main Field Groups?
| Group | Examples | Usually comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice details | Invoice number, issue date, invoice type, currency, business process and specification identifiers | ERP transaction plus fixed values |
| Seller | Legal name, address, TRN, TIN, electronic address (Peppol ID) | Company master data |
| Buyer | Legal name, address, TRN where registered, TIN and electronic address | Customer master data |
| Tax breakdown and totals | Taxable amount per rate, VAT amount in AED, totals, discounts, reverse-charge indicator | ERP tax engine |
| Line items | Description, quantity, unit price, line VAT rate and amount | Sales order and product data |
| Scenario flags | Free zone, deemed supply, margin scheme, summary invoice, continuous supply, agent billing, e-commerce, exports | New logic in your ERP |
What Are TIN, TRN and the Peppol Electronic Address?
The TRN is your 15-digit VAT registration number. The TIN is the first 10 digits of the TRN and serves as the participant identifier for e-invoicing. The seller's electronic identifier uses scheme 0235 for UAE-registered businesses. Businesses that are not registered for VAT but are in scope for B2B transactions need to register with the FTA to obtain a TIN.
When a buyer has not yet been onboarded to the network, the supplier still has to include the predefined endpoint for the buyer's electronic address. Ask your ASP how it handles this.
What Are the Scenario Flags?
A single eight-flag transaction type code tells the FTA which special scenarios apply. Several can apply to one invoice. The FTA guidance makes the free trade zone, margin scheme and deemed supply flags mandatory. This is where many ERPs need new logic, because these facts often live in someone's head or in an invoice note today.
- Free zone: supplies involving designated zones. See e-invoicing in Dubai, including free zones.
- Deemed supply: for example, goods used privately or given away.
- Margin scheme: used in sectors such as second-hand goods.
- Summary and continuous supply invoices, agent billing, e-commerce supplies and exports.
Which Fields Cause the Most Problems?
- Buyer TRN and TIN: missing, outdated or typed with spaces.
- Addresses: free text instead of structured emirate, city and country codes.
- Tax categories: zero-rated, exempt and out-of-scope lines coded the same way.
- AED amounts on foreign-currency invoices.
- Credit notes that do not reference the original invoice.
How Should You Prepare Your Data?
- Download the official field list from the MoF or FTA, or get it from your ASP, and map each field to a source in your ERP.
- Mark each field as master data, transaction data or fixed value.
- Clean customer master data: TRNs, legal names, structured addresses, Peppol IDs.
- Add logic for the scenario flags and test each one.
- Run sample invoices through your ASP's validation before go-live.
Our 25-step readiness checklist puts these steps in order, and PINT AE explained covers the format itself.
How VEATEX Helps
VEATEX maps ERP and custom-system data to PINT AE, builds the logic for scenario flags, and runs validation testing with accredited providers. We have built a Peppol platform that passed OpenPeppol testing. See our e-invoicing services.
