Quick answer

AI assistants recommend businesses they can retrieve and trust. Make sure their search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot) can reach your site, rank well in Google and Bing, publish answer-first pages with specific facts, keep your business details identical everywhere, and earn genuine mentions in reviews, video, forums and press. Structured data and llms.txt are optional extras with weak evidence of direct impact.

Key takeaways

  • Most AI answers are built by searching the web at question time, so crawlability and classic search rankings remain the foundation.
  • Each assistant uses its own crawler for search; blocking OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from those answers.
  • Off-site brand mentions, especially on YouTube and the wider web, correlate more strongly with AI visibility than on-site factors.
  • A 2026 Ahrefs study found adding JSON-LD schema produced no major uplift in AI citations, and Google says llms.txt is not used by Search.
  • Measure AI visibility with Search Console, Bing's AI Performance report, referral traffic and a fixed set of test prompts.

More buyers now start with a question to an AI assistant instead of a search box: "Which Shopify agency should I use in Dubai?", "Best accounting software for a small UK firm?", "Who makes a good linen dress under a certain budget?" The assistant names a few businesses, and the ones it does not name are invisible in that moment.

A whole industry has appeared promising to fix that, much of it built on guesswork. This guide sticks to what the platforms themselves document and what published studies have measured, as of October 2026, and is clear about where the evidence is thin.

How Do ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity Decide What to Recommend?

For questions about current products, services and businesses, AI assistants usually search the web at question time, read a handful of retrieved pages and summarise them. Your chance of being recommended depends mostly on being retrievable, being relevant to the searches the assistant runs, and appearing trustworthy across many sources.

Google describes the mechanism directly in its guide to optimising for generative AI features. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also called grounding, means the model relies on Google's core Search ranking systems to fetch relevant, up-to-date pages. Query fan-out means the model generates several related searches to gather more information. OpenAI's ChatGPT search documentation describes the same pattern: ChatGPT rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to third-party search providers, naming Microsoft among them.

Two consequences follow. First, if search systems cannot crawl or index your pages, assistants cannot cite them. Second, the assistant is not matching one prompt to one page; it is running several searches, so your content needs to answer the related sub-questions buyers ask, not just a head keyword.

Which AI Crawlers Should Your Website Allow?

Allow each platform's search crawler if you want to appear in its answers. Training crawlers are a separate choice: blocking them does not remove you from AI search results, while blocking search crawlers does.

PlatformSearch or retrieval crawlerWhat blocking it doesTraining or other control token
ChatGPT (OpenAI)OAI-SearchBotSite not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational linkGPTBot (training); ChatGPT-User is user-triggered and not governed by robots.txt
Claude (Anthropic)Claude-SearchBotPrevents indexing for search, reducing visibility in Claude's resultsClaudeBot (training); Claude-User fetches pages when a user asks
PerplexityPerplexityBotRemoves the site from Perplexity's search results and linksPerplexity-User handles user-initiated visits and generally ignores robots.txt
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGooglebot (standard Search crawling)Blocking Googlebot removes you from Google Search entirelyGoogle-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps; it does not affect Google Search
Microsoft CopilotBingbot (Bing index)Blocking Bingbot removes you from Bing and the AI experiences built on itNot applicable

The details come from each provider's documentation: OpenAI's crawler overview, Anthropic's help centre, Perplexity's bot documentation and Google's crawler reference, which states that Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal". A robots.txt that allows search crawlers but blocks training crawlers looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /

Check your firewall, not just robots.txt. OpenAI notes that publishers must also confirm their host or content delivery network allows traffic from its published search-bot IP addresses. Bot-protection settings on Cloudflare and similar services can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Does Ranking in Google Mean AI Assistants Will Cite You?

For Google's own AI Overviews, largely yes; for standalone assistants, only partly. Ahrefs' research shows AI Overviews mostly cite pages already in Google's top 10, while ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot frequently cite pages that do not rank for the original prompt at all.

In an August 2025 Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries, 76% of AI Overview citations came from top-10 Google results. For the standalone assistants, the share of cited URLs ranking in Google's top 10 for the same prompt averaged about 12%: roughly 8% for ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot and about 29% for Perplexity. Ahrefs attributes much of the gap to query fan-out, because assistants search for variations of the prompt rather than the exact wording.

The practical reading: strong traditional SEO is necessary but not sufficient. You also need pages that rank for the narrower sub-questions an assistant might search, and a presence in Bing's index, which feeds Microsoft's AI products and is used by other providers. Our Shopify SEO guide covers the search foundations for ecommerce sites.

What Kind of Content Gets Cited in AI Answers?

Content that states facts clearly and specifically, backs them up and offers something beyond common knowledge is the most quotable. Answer-first paragraphs, defined terms, statistics with sources and expert quotations all make a page easier for a model to use.

The most-cited academic evidence is the 2023 paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024. Testing nine content changes on a benchmark of 10,000 queries, the authors found that adding quotations, adding statistics and citing sources raised a page's visibility in generated answers by roughly 30–40% on their main measure, while traditional keyword stuffing performed worse than doing nothing. A test on Perplexity showed improvements of up to 37%. Two caveats matter: the effects varied by subject area, and the experiments used controlled generative engines rather than today's commercial assistants.

Google's 2026 guidance points the same way from a different angle, asking for "non-commodity" content: unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge. In practice:

  • Open each section with a one- or two-sentence direct answer, then explain.
  • Use specific numbers, dates, named standards and named tools, with sources.
  • Publish first-hand material others cannot copy: your processes, original data, real project examples and clear opinions.
  • Write comparison and "how to choose" pages, because assistants are often asked to recommend between options.
  • Keep service, pricing-model and location information explicit on your own site, so assistants do not have to infer it.

Why Does Entity Consistency Matter for AI Recommendations?

An entity is a distinct, identifiable thing, such as your business. AI systems and search engines connect information about an entity from many sources; if your name, description, location and services differ across them, the connection is weaker and recommendations are less confident.

Use one exact business name, one short description of what you do and for whom, and the same contact details on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, marketplaces and social profiles. Google's Organization structured data documentation says the markup can help disambiguate your organisation from others, and recommends a sameAs property listing your official profiles on other sites. Place it on your home page or about page. Google's AI optimisation guide also names Business Profiles and Merchant Center feeds as ways for local businesses and products to appear in AI responses.

Do Off-Site Mentions Matter More Than Your Own Website?

The available data suggests they matter a great deal. In Ahrefs' studies of 75,000 brands, off-site signals such as brand mentions across the web and on YouTube correlated more strongly with AI visibility than site-level factors like backlinks or number of pages.

Ahrefs' December 2025 analysis found YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with brand visibility, at about 0.74 for ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and 0.71 for AI Overviews, followed by branded web mentions at between 0.66 and 0.71. Ahrefs is explicit that correlation is not causation: well-known brands get mentioned everywhere and recommended more, and the study cannot separate cause from effect. Google's guidance adds a warning that pursuing inauthentic brand mentions is not effective.

The safe strategy is to earn mentions that would be valuable even without AI:

  1. Reviews on the platforms your buyers use, such as Google, Trustpilot or industry-specific sites, with replies to negative ones.
  2. YouTube demonstrations, explainers and customer stories that mention your brand by name.
  3. Reddit and forums, by answering questions helpfully under a disclosed identity, never with fake accounts.
  4. Directories and marketplaces relevant to your sector and region, with consistent details.
  5. Press and partner pages: industry publications, podcasts, supplier and client case studies, award lists you genuinely qualify for.

Does Structured Data or llms.txt Help AI Visibility?

The honest answer is: not directly, according to the best current evidence. Both are cheap to add and have other benefits, but neither should be sold as an AI ranking lever.

On structured data, Google says there is "no special schema.org structured data" needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A May 2026 Ahrefs study tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 control pages and found "no major uplift in citations on any platform"; a separate experiment it cites found AI systems extracted only visible HTML and ignored JSON-LD during direct retrieval. The caveat is that the study covered pages already heavily cited. Structured data remains worthwhile for rich results, merchant listings and entity clarity.

On llms.txt, the file was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 as a Markdown summary to help AI agents use a website. It is a proposal, not an adopted standard. Google's AI guide says Google Search does not use such files, while Chrome's Lighthouse added an llms.txt check in an agentic-browsing audit category in May 2026, as Search Engine Journal reported. Add one if it is easy; do not expect citations from it.

How Much Does Content Freshness Matter?

Freshness matters somewhat, especially for ChatGPT, but substance still wins. AI assistants tend to cite newer content than traditional search results, yet the average cited page is still years old.

In a July 2025 Ahrefs analysis of about 17 million citations, content cited by AI assistants was on average 25.7% fresher than pages in organic Google results, with ChatGPT showing the strongest preference and AI Overviews behaving much like normal search. The average cited page was still about 2.9 years old. Update important pages when facts change, show a genuine "last updated" date, and do not change dates without changing content. A website redesign checklist helps ensure updates do not break URLs that are already earning citations.

How Do You Measure Your AI Visibility?

Combine platform reports, referral analytics and a repeatable prompt test. No single tool shows visibility across every assistant, so triangulate.

  • Google Search Console: Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the Web search type; it is not reported separately.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: the AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows citations across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partners, including the grounding queries that triggered them.
  • Analytics referrals: track sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com, and the pages they land on.
  • A fixed prompt panel: 20 to 50 questions your buyers would ask, run monthly in each assistant, recording whether you are named, cited or described accurately.
  • Ask new leads: add "AI assistant" as an option in "How did you hear about us?"

For ecommerce, product data is its own channel: OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping uses structured product metadata, merchant feeds, Shopify Catalog and public reviews. For service businesses, clear service pages matter most; see our guides to B2B website design and your first business website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend my business?

Not in the organic answers. OpenAI states that ChatGPT's product results are selected independently and are not ads, and Google says there are no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal search eligibility. Advertising products exist on some AI surfaces and are labelled separately. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in organic AI answers is promising something no platform offers.

How is GEO different from SEO?

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) aims to get your content cited or summarised inside AI-generated answers, while SEO aims to rank pages in a list of links. In practice they overlap heavily, because AI systems retrieve pages through search indexes. GEO adds emphasis on answer-first writing, quotable specifics, entity consistency, off-site mentions and measuring citations rather than only rankings and clicks.

Should I block GPTBot or other AI training crawlers?

That is a business decision separate from AI search visibility. OpenAI's GPTBot and Anthropic's ClaudeBot collect content for model training, while OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot fetch pages for search answers. You can block training crawlers and still allow search crawlers. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini apps, and does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

Assistants that search the web live can cite a new page as soon as it is crawled and indexed by the search systems they use, which can be days for an established site. Changing what models say about your brand without searching takes far longer, because it depends on future training data. Building the off-site reputation that drives recommendations typically takes months of consistent effort.

Do AI assistants recommend small or local businesses?

Yes, particularly for local and niche queries where they search for current options. For local businesses, a complete and accurate Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone details across directories, genuine recent reviews and a website that clearly states services and service areas are the core signals. Google specifically names Business Profiles as helping visibility in its AI responses.

Is llms.txt worth adding to my website?

It is cheap to add but has no proven effect on AI search visibility. llms.txt was proposed in September 2024 as a Markdown summary to help AI agents use a site. Google states that Google Search does not use such files, though Chrome's Lighthouse added an audit for it in 2026 for agent-browsing purposes. Add one if it is easy, but do not prioritise it over content and reputation.
